Toxic Ingredients Hiding in Your Skincare (And What to Use Instead)

Your skincare routine might be harming your skin more than helping it.

Most people trust that if a product is on the shelf, it’s safe to use. But the truth is, many skincare products contain ingredients that do more harm than good. Companies use preservatives, artificial fragrances, and cheap fillers to extend shelf life and create a luxurious feel, but some of these chemicals are linked to skin irritation, hormone disruption, and even long-term health risks.

If you’ve ever dealt with unexplained breakouts, redness, or dryness, your skincare might be the culprit. For Gen Z, a generation that actually reads ingredient lists and cares about clean beauty, knowing what’s in your products is essential. The good news is that better alternatives exist, and switching to safer options doesn’t mean sacrificing effective skincare. Here are 10 toxic ingredients you should watch out for and what to use instead.

1. Parabens can disrupt your hormones.

Parabens are preservatives found in everything from moisturizers to serums, keeping products bacteria-free for longer. The problem? They mimic estrogen in the body, potentially throwing off hormone balance and increasing the risk of reproductive issues. The National Institute of Health has even linked them to breast cancer, raising concerns about their long-term safety.

Instead of parabens, look for brands that use plant-based preservatives like fermented radish root or rosemary extract. Waterless skincare is another great option since it doesn’t need strong preservatives to stay fresh. Many clean beauty brands have already ditched parabens, making it easier to find safer alternatives.

2. Artificial fragrances are a chemical mystery.

That “fresh” or “floral” scent in your lotion might be hiding a long list of chemicals. According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics brands don’t have to disclose what’s in their fragrances. Meaning a single word on an ingredient list can represent dozens of synthetic compounds, including phthalates, which are linked to hormone disruption.

Fragrance-free products are the best option if you have sensitive skin or want to avoid unnecessary chemicals. If you like scented skincare, choose products with naturally derived fragrances from essential oils like lavender, chamomile, or rose. Just be mindful—some essential oils can be irritating too, so always check for gentle formulations.

3. Sulfates strip your skin’s natural barrier.

If your face wash or body wash foams up like crazy, it probably contains sulfates. These harsh detergents, including sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), create that satisfying lather but also strip away natural oils, leaving skin dry and irritated.

A better alternative is sulfate-free cleansers that use gentler surfactants like coco-glucoside or decyl glucoside. These cleanse effectively without damaging your skin’s protective barrier. If your skin always feels tight after washing, switching to a sulfate-free product could make a huge difference.

4. Mineral oil clogs pores and does nothing for your skin.

A common ingredient in lotions and creams, mineral oil creates a barrier on the skin that locks in moisture. But because it’s derived from petroleum, it can also trap dirt and bacteria, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. While it makes products feel smooth, it doesn’t provide any real nourishment for your skin.

Opt for plant-based oils like jojoba, squalane, or rosehip instead. These offer hydration while also delivering essential nutrients, making them a better choice for keeping skin soft and healthy without the risk of congestion.

5. Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives are lurking in your products.

Some skincare preservatives slowly release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, over time. These include ingredients like DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, and quaternium-15. Exposure to formaldehyde can cause irritation, allergic reactions, and, in the long run, potential health risks.

Instead of these harsh preservatives, look for skincare brands that use natural preservation methods like fermented coconut extract or antimicrobial plant extracts. More companies are moving toward clean formulations, so finding safer options is easier than ever.

6. Chemical sunscreens can mess with your hormones and harm marine life.

Sunscreen is essential, but not all formulas are created equal. Many chemical sunscreens contain oxybenzone and octinoxate, which absorb UV rays but also absorb into your bloodstream. Studies have linked these chemicals to hormone disruption, and they’re also notorious for contributing to coral reef damage.

Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are the safer choice. They provide broad-spectrum protection by sitting on top of the skin rather than being absorbed. Look for reef-safe formulas to protect both your skin and the environment.

7. Synthetic dyes do nothing but irritate your skin.

That fun pastel face mask or bright-colored serum? It might look cute, but synthetic dyes often come from coal tar or petroleum and can trigger allergic reactions and skin irritation.

For skincare that looks great without the risks, choose products that get their color from natural ingredients like turmeric, beetroot, or spirulina. These options not only add a pop of color but also bring extra skin benefits like antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.

8. Triclosan was banned in hand soaps but still sneaks into skincare.

Once a common antibacterial agent, triclosan has been banned in some products due to its link to hormone disruption and potential long-term health effects. Yet, it still appears in certain face washes, deodorants, and even toothpaste.

Ditch products with triclosan in favor of naturally antibacterial ingredients like tea tree oil, green tea extract, or witch hazel. These provide the same cleansing benefits without disrupting your body’s natural systems.

9. PEGs help products absorb but come with contamination risks.

Polyethylene glycols (PEGs) make skincare feel silky and help ingredients penetrate deeper, but they’re often contaminated with harmful byproducts like ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane, both of which are linked to cancer.

Instead of PEGs, look for skincare that uses aloe vera, glycerin, or coconut-derived emulsifiers to keep products smooth and absorbent without the risk of toxic contamination.

10. Silicones make your skin feel smooth but can cause buildup.

Silicones are used in skincare and makeup to create a silky, non-greasy feel, but they form a barrier that can trap dirt, bacteria, and dead skin cells. This can lead to clogged pores and breakouts, especially if you have acne-prone skin.

Swap silicones for lightweight, nourishing ingredients like niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, or plant-based butters. These give skin a hydrated, healthy glow without the risk of buildup.
